Cost and Price Allocation in Resource Groups within Business Central

For businesses managing projects, accurately budgeting costs and prices for various types of staff members is crucial. In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Resource Groups can be a handy feature, especially when you're trying to categorize resources such as an Operations Manager, Supervisor, and Laborer. However, what do you do when the Resource Group manages costs efficiently but doesn't handle prices as expected?

Resource Groups in Business Central are typically used to categorize and group similar types of resources. They're quite beneficial for reporting and can simplify cost tracking. For instance, when you create job task lines and add a resource, the cost associated with the Resource Group is automatically pulled through, ensuring consistency in cost accounting.

Where it becomes tricky is with the pricing. Ideally, you want to allocate costs and prices to a job without having to micromanage each entry. The goal is to have the budget cost/price stem from the associated Resource Group rather than individual resources or specific jobs. This not only streamlines the process but also provides a level of abstraction away from the actual salaries of individual staff members.

Unfortunately, budgeting cost/price at the Resource Group level may not be a built-in feature within Business Central – costs and prices are typically derived from the individual Resource Card.

If the requirement is to avoid setting cost and price at a resource level and you wish for prices to automatically align with the cost from the appropriate Resource Group, then, unfortunately, this is not standard functionality in Business Central.
