Thanks for the clarification. This requirement can be solved, but it works a bit differently than you might expect. You can manage field permissions to grant read permissions, but effectively, the user will have edit rights. So, the solution would be setting up 'deny' permissions on the update of fields for users that are not allowed editing the field. See my blog for an example bassed on another use case.
